Joining an Active Workplace: Get to Know Paycom’s Fitness and Recreation Programs

Kyle Birdwell | February 10, 2023

I’m Kyle Birdwell, Paycom’s team leader of fitness and recreation.

I joined Paycom in 2018 as a benefits coordinator on the Human Capital Management team, where I learned a lot about our internal systems. In 2019, I was blessed with the opportunity to become Paycom’s wellness coordinator, where I managed the day-to-day operations of our on-site fitness center. Since then, we have grown the team and made great strides in the programs offered to our employees.

I’m proud of our accomplishments and look forward to helping Paycom’s fitness and recreation programs continue to grow and benefit our workforce. I also wanted to take this opportunity to discuss Paycom’s modern stance on employee wellness and how we put that forward-thinking attitude to work.

Get a boost at work

A Harvard study found that the benefits of exercise aren’t simply physical. Exercise also benefits your mental processes with improved performance that includes:

  • enhanced creativity
  • quicker learning
  • sharper memory
  • improved concentration
  • stress reduction

A Leeds Metropolitan University study found that workers who visited the gym during working hours were more productive, managed their time better and felt greater work satisfaction.

Paycom’s fitness centers

Paycom works to support team members in all aspects of their life. That’s why it offers free, on-site fitness centers for team members in Oklahoma City and Grapevine. Paycom’s fitness centers offer cardio equipment; resistance training machines; free weights; basketball, volleyball and soccer courts; and a varied selection of exercise classes for all interests and activity levels.

To make it easy to fit a workout into the day, our fitness facilities also offer free amenities that include lockers, deodorant, hairspray, body wash, shampoo, hair dryers and towels for the convenience of our employees.

Our team members’ well-being is important to us here, and fitness is a crucial part of that. Our Fitness and Recreation team is made up of experts always willing to help our employees on their fitness journey, whether that be through consultations, workout advice or training to make the most of our equipment.

Teams, classes and leagues make it easy

Adding activity to your day doesn’t have to be dull, and it certainly doesn’t need to be a solitary pursuit. At Paycom, our intramural leagues and group classes help extend that spirit of camaraderie as we offer a new way for our workforce to make fitness a part of their schedule.

Whether it’s going hard in the paint, mastering child’s pose, working on your roundhouse kick or giving yourself over to the rhythm of a dance-cardio workout, my team strives to provide something for everyone when it’s time to get moving. And because we understand how demanding daily schedules can be, classes and leagues meet at all different times, from mornings to lunch and at the end of the workday.

Finding fitness that works for you

When it comes to fitness, we all have different motivations, interests and goals. It’s important to try out different forms of exercise to see what you enjoy and get a better understanding of what your body can handle when first starting out. Remember that a little movement is better than nothing at all and the best program for you is the one you enjoy! If you aren’t sure where to start, I recommend scheduling time with a professional. They can point you in the right direction and help you better understand different forms of exercise.

At Paycom, our fitness and recreation team offers one-on-one fitness consultations to help our employees grow, whether they are just starting their fitness journey or planning on improving their current efforts. There are many benefits to having an on-site fitness center and engaging in physical activity in the workplace.

A little activity makes all the difference

Unfortunately, sedentary lifestyles have become prevalent throughout the nation. Physical activity can benefit your physical and mental well-being better than any supplement on the market, as it naturally improves your mood and self-esteem. And the boosted productivity makes it easier to feel good about your work!

Regular activity can also help minimize the risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes, multiple types of cancer and heart disease. Want to feel that difference for yourself? Find a type of exercise you enjoy and try it out for a few weeks. You’ll see what I mean!

Physical health is important for everyone, and finding a workplace that helps support your health and encourage your fitness goals is equally important. Are you ready to join an active workplace? See career opportunities at Paycom!
