Toward a More Inclusive Workplace: Paycom Recognizes National Disability Awareness Month

Abraham Mendieta | October 21, 2022

This October, we celebrate the contributions of American workers with disabilities during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). According to the CDC, 26% of adults in the United States live with a disability.

At Paycom, we support inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging. Our hope is for our workforce to feel they can bring their whole selves to work in an environment where everyone can thrive.

“Paycom has nurtured a culture of value and respect. I feel we are able to create a more inclusive experience for candidates and the business.”
Kandace R., Talent Acquisition Recruiter

National Disability Employment Awareness Month History

National Disability Employment Awareness Month began in 1945 to educate the public about disability and employment issues. Today, we observe the month to pay tribute to accomplishments of workers with disabilities and commit to create equal opportunity for all citizens.

What Is a Disability?

The ADA defines a person with a disability as “a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.” Disabilities can include mobility disabilities, mental health disabilities, chronic illnesses, intellectual disabilities and hearing and vision disabilities.

Doing Our Part

Paycom is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and access to reasonable accommodation in our application process for individuals with disabilities. Whether it’s creating a better culture or simply removing unnecessary barriers that make it difficult for people with disabilities to work, live and thrive, there are many ways to live up to our ideals.

Some ways we practice inclusion include:

  • training and equipping recruiters and interviewers to assist individuals with disabilities
  • evaluating policies, practices and communications for inclusive language
  • enabling live transcripts for virtual meetings and ensuring training courses are accessible for visual and hearing needs
  • updating and modifying workspaces so employees have the tools needed to do their job
  • employing universal design in our products and physical environment
  • providing reasonable accommodations in daily tasks
  • working to eliminate the stigma and stereotypes depicting people with disabilities as less capable or healthy
  • establishing a zero-tolerance culture when it comes to discriminatory behavior

“Disabilities are as diverse as the people who live with them. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to accommodations, accessibility or supporting individuals of various abilities. No one should be excluded from opportunities to exceed, learn or grow in the workplace based on their ability.”
Lexee A., Team Leader of Campus Recruitment Programs
