LinkedIn is big — really big. With almost 800 million users worldwide, it’s easy to get lost in the mix. However, your LinkedIn may be the first impression you give a potential employer, so it’s important that it accurately illustrates your potential.

With so many options at your disposal for your profile, it can be daunting to determine where to start. That’s why we’ve assembled seven tips to help propel your LinkedIn in the right direction.

Have a great headshot

Besides your name, your profile picture will likely be the first thing a recruiter sees. Make sure it’s a reflection of what you aspire to professionally. When in doubt, present yourself as you would to a high-ranking executive or a must-impress client.

Utilize a background

A background is not only a great way to spice up LinkedIn’s default option, but also emphasize your personal brand. Think of it as the wallpaper of your personal office. In tandem with your headshot, an effective background should be an extension of what you want to convey to recruiters.

Update your current responsibilities

The current responsibilities section of your LinkedIn can give a recruiter insight into who you are as a professional without digging through your resume. Likewise, you shouldn’t just copy and paste your resume into this section. It should convey highlights of your career that can be made public, or what you might consider “bragging rights.” However, don’t show off with unnecessary information that’s too specific for a recruiter to consider.

Turn your summary into a story

Your summary is, in many ways, the first answer you might give in a hypothetical interview. While where you’ve been and where you see yourself is useful, the way you convey this information is just as important. Remember, a summary isn’t just a timeline of what you’ve done, but who you are.

Be strategic about your endorsed skills

Tying a complicated knot might be useful and unique, but unless it’s an unshakable piece of your professional profile, it’s probably best left off of your endorsed skills. This section should include skills that are relevant to the jobs you’re seeking and, if possible, be endorsed by your references.

Customize your LinkedIn URL

A series of seemingly unrelated characters might make for a strong password, but it does little to make you stand out. Creating a unique LinkedIn URL is another way to express your personal brand while helping recruiters easily find you.

Expand your network

An updated profile can help you better connect with individuals relevant to your career. For all you know, the right connection could be your first step toward an interview for your dream job.
